This porcelain collection is the result of an experimental research into new ways of making clay sculptures. The research resulted in a collection of interior objects that combine refined craftsmanship and the fundamental force of gravity.
The work of Atelier FIG. uncovers new ideas about contemporary crafts. Driven by experiment, their project the Gravity Collection started with rethinking ceramic crafts. Fascinated by liquid clay, they discovered techniques that would allow them to work more spontaneously without the interference of rigid plaster moulds.
During this process they developed an alternative method into an innovative craft.
Where they dips moist absorbing structures into liquid clay whereafter they are hang-dried. These structures then completely deform under the weight of the added clay. In this process, gravity always has the final say.
This makes the process a continuous back and forth between the natural force and his creative interventions, a fusion of the unexpected and the controllable. They refer to the object as nothing more than a `long event’. instead of forcing a shape into the material, he conducts a dialogue with materials and the physical forces to which these materials are subjected.

Atelier FIG. was established by the Dutch designers Ruben Hoogvliet and Gijs Wouters, who joined forces to harness their fascination for materials and crafts. With both a background in design, craft, fashion and various international collaborations, Atelier FIG. is characterised by investigating material and interdisciplinary practices.
Their experimental approach explores a wide range of applications and does not stick to one specific material or technique. By exploring the cross-sections, fluidity and boundaries of material, this duo puts imagination and transformation at the core of their creations. Production processes are turned upside down and embedded in new environments, revealing the uniqueness and unconventional nature of the material.
The name of Atelier FIG. is rooted in their passion for form and figures and their passion for nature. Referring to the fig tree, the duo reinterprets the cultivation and transformation of natural material into their work. Letting nature and character of material influence the originality, resourcefulness and aesthetic of the final outcome. Capturing time and the motion of making is evident in the creation and builds up a vast archive of aesthetics highlighting the relation between material, place and form.

The making process of the work requires a completely different set of tools than what is normally used in a ceramic workshop. Armed with needles, threads, clamps and hanging frames, they create their product/sculptures. Without only forcing a shape into a specific material, they conduct a dialogue with materials they work with, showing the material and the technique in its full potential.
